HEXACO
The Big Five plus one — a sixth factor, Honesty–Humility, that changes what the model can see.
What it is
HEXACO is a six-factor trait model developed by Ashton and Lee from the same lexical research as the Big Five. Five of its factors mirror the Big Five closely; its contribution is a distinct sixth — Honesty–Humility — that the Big Five folds imperfectly into Agreeableness.
That sixth factor is why HEXACO is often preferred for studying integrity, exploitation and the "dark" traits: it isolates sincerity, fairness and modesty as a dimension in their own right, giving cleaner prediction of who will cut corners or manipulate.
Like the Big Five it scores dimensions, not types — a person is a six-number profile, each factor with its own facets.
What changes vs. the Big Five
Honesty–Humility is new — sincerity, fairness, greed-avoidance and modesty as one axis.
HEXACO’s Emotionality reshuffles some content (e.g. sentimentality) between factors.
Low Honesty–Humility predicts manipulation and entitlement more cleanly than the Big Five can.
Going deeper
Isolating Honesty–Humility gives cleaner prediction of exploitation, cheating, delinquency and the dark traits than the Big Five, which scatters that content across Agreeableness.
HEXACO comes from the same cross-language lexical studies as the Big Five; adding Honesty–Humility also reshuffles some content between Emotionality and Agreeableness relative to the five-factor model.
Reach for HEXACO when integrity, fairness or manipulation is the question. For general description, it and the Big Five are largely interchangeable.
Sincerity, fairness, modesty, and avoidance of greed and manipulation.
The signature HEXACO factor: the tendency to be fair and genuine rather than exploitative. Its low pole is the core of the "dark" personality — entitlement, manipulation and status-seeking.
Fear, anxiety, sentimentality and need for attachment.
HEXACO’s emotional-sensitivity factor — vulnerability, empathy and the desire for closeness. It overlaps Big Five Neuroticism but reassigns some warmth-related content.
Social boldness, liveliness and self-esteem.
Confidence and engagement with the social world — much like Big Five Extraversion, including social self-esteem and liveliness.
Forgiveness, gentleness, flexibility and patience.
HEXACO Agreeableness centres on tolerance and forbearance — willingness to forgive and cooperate even when wronged — as distinct from the fairness captured by Honesty–Humility.
Organisation, diligence, perfectionism and prudence.
The disciplined, orderly, goal-directed factor — essentially Big Five Conscientiousness, predicting achievement and reliability.
Curiosity, creativity, and appreciation of the unusual.
Intellectual and aesthetic openness — inquiry, imagination and comfort with the unconventional, as in the Big Five.
Read it honestly
HEXACO’s edge over the Big Five is real but narrow — it mainly matters when Honesty–Humility is what you care about (integrity, exploitation, the dark traits). For general description the two are largely interchangeable, and the Big Five has the larger evidence base and toolset. Use HEXACO when the sixth factor earns its keep.
