Socionics
Jung’s types rebuilt as a theory of how minds exchange information — sixteen types across four quadras.
What it is
Socionics is a post-Jungian system developed by Aušra Augustinavičiūtė in the 1970s–80s. It shares MBTI’s roots but is a different theory: it models personality as information metabolism — how a psyche prioritises eight information "elements" — and, crucially, it is built to predict the relationships between types (its "intertype relations").
Its sixteen sociotypes carry three-letter codes (e.g. LIE, ILE, SEI) and rough MBTI-style equivalents, but the mapping is inexact and hotly debated — the underlying function models differ, so treat the equivalence as a bridge, not an identity.
The distinctive move is the quadra: the sixteen types cluster into four groups of four that share the same valued information elements and get along naturally. Quadras give Socionics its social-compatibility lens that MBTI lacks.
The four quadras
Curious, warm, idea-and-comfort oriented; values open inquiry and cosy sociability. ILE, SEI, ESE, LII.
Intense, hierarchical, ideological; values willpower, vision and group passion. EIE, LSI, SLE, IEI.
Pragmatic, results-driven, loyal to the few; values efficiency and hard reality. SEE, ILI, LIE, ESI.
Practical, humane, improvement-minded; values competence and quiet decency. IEE, SLI, LSE, EII.
Information elements & intertype relations
Socionics uses eight information elements — the four Jungian functions each in an extraverted (bold, object-focused) and introverted (field-focused) form. A type is defined by which two it leads with and which two it values but is weak in (its "dual seeking" function).
From that structure Socionics derives fixed relationships between any two types — from duality (its ideal complement) through activity, mirror, conflict and supervision. This relational engine is what people come to Socionics for and what most distinguishes it from MBTI.
Going deeper
Each type runs all eight elements in a fixed order across four blocks: Ego (leading + creative — strong and valued), Super-ego (role + vulnerable — weak and unvalued), Super-id (suggestive + mobilising — weak but craved), and Id (ignoring + demonstrative — strong but unvalued). The dual leads with exactly the elements you crave, which is why duality feels like completion.
The central relation: your dual leads with the elements you value but are weak in, so together you cover the whole. Socionics holds duality to be the most naturally supportive, low-friction pairing.
Activity partners energise each other; mirror partners share the same two strong elements reversed; conflictors value what you are weakest in (fascinating, then grating); supervision is asymmetric pressure on the supervisee’s vulnerable spot.
Intertype relations are Socionics’ signature claim and its least empirically established — a rich hypothesis about compatibility, not a law.

Read it honestly
Socionics is popular in Eastern Europe and largely outside mainstream psychology; its function models and MBTI equivalences are contested even among its own schools, and its intertype-relation predictions are not empirically established. Its value is as a rich relational language — especially the quadra and duality ideas — not as a validated measurement. Hold the type loosely and the equivalences more loosely still.
